And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.”
And He said, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel,
‘I AM has sent me to you.’”
~ Exodus 3:14 ~
I often hear pastors say that God is saying, “I am the becoming One; I will become what you need.” David Guzik, in his commentary on Exodus 3 says of this verse: “The name I AM invites us to fill in the blank to meet our need – when we are in darkness, Jesus says I am the light; when we are hungry, He says I am the bread of life, when we are defenseless, He says I am the Good Shepherd. God is the becoming one, becoming what we need.”
In the first 15 chapters of John are the seven “I am” statements of Jesus:
“I am the bread of life.
He who comes to Me shall never hunger,
and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.”
~ John 6:35 ~
“I am the light of the world.
He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness,
but have the light of life.”
~ John 8:12~
“I am the door of the sheep. . . .
If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved,
and will go in and out and find pasture.”
~ John 10:7, 9 ~
“I am the good shepherd.
The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep. . . .
and I know My sheep, and am known by My own.”
~ John 10:11, 14 ~
“I am the resurrection and the life.
He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live.”
~ John 11:25 ~
“I am the way, the truth, and the life.
No one comes to the Father except through Me.”
~ John 14:6 ~
“I am the true vine,
and My Father is the vinedresser. . . .
He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit;
for without Me you can do nothing.”
~ John 15:1, 5 ~
Each of these statements brings to head who Jesus is in our lives and how He sustains us in every way; He truly does satisfy the needs of our souls.
Father, thank You for knowing us so well and meeting our needs through Jesus. “Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends” (John 15:13); You did this for us, Jesus, and we are grateful! Sing to Him a new song; for His love endures forever! Blessed be Your name!
O LORD, our Lord,
How excellent is Your name in all the earth!
~ Psalm 8:9 ~
